Divine Disruption: When God Wrecks Your Plans for Something Greater
Beloved, have you ever found yourself standing in the ruins of your own plans? You mapped out your future, you set your goals, you prayed over your dreams, and yet, suddenly, everything changed. Doors closed. Opportunities vanished. Life took a sharp turn you never saw coming. Maybe you’re there right now, wondering, “God, why did You let this happen? What are You doing with my life?”
This morning, I want to speak to you about Divine Disruption: When God Wrecks Your Plans for Something Greater. Because sometimes, the very thing we call a setback is God’s setup for a breakthrough. Sometimes, what feels like chaos is actually the construction site of a miracle.
1. God’s Pattern: Disrupting for Destiny
Let’s open our Bibles to Genesis 50:20. Joseph, after years of betrayal, slavery, and prison, says to his brothers,
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Joseph’s life was a series of divine disruptions. He had dreams of greatness, but God’s path to fulfillment was nothing like he expected. The pit, the prison, the pain; none of it was in Joseph’s plan. But all of it was in God’s purpose.
Question:
How many of us have had our own “pit” moments? Times when life didn’t go as planned, and we wondered if God had forgotten us?
The answer is, God never wastes a disruption. He uses every setback to bring us closer to our destiny.
2. Why Does God Disrupt Our Plans?
i. To Protect Us from Less
Sometimes God closes a door because He has something better in store for us. Proverbs 16:9 says,
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
We see the now; God sees the not yet. We see the surface; God sees the heart. When God says “no,” it’s not rejection, it’s redirection.
ii. To Prepare Us for More
God’s disruptions are often His invitations to grow. James 1:2-4 tells us,
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
God is more interested in your character than your comfort. He’s preparing you for a purpose greater than you can imagine.
iii. To Reveal His Glory
When God disrupts our plans, He positions us to see His power. Remember Mary? She was planning a simple life, but God interrupted her with the greatest assignment in history; to bear the Savior of the world (Luke 1:26-38).
God’s disruptions are always for His glory and our good.
3. How Should We Respond to Divine Disruption?
i. Surrender
Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, prayed,
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)
Surrender is the key to peace in the midst of disruption. Will you let go of your plans and trust God’s purpose?
ii. Trust
Romans 8:28 declares,
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
Even when you can’t trace God’s hand, you can trust His heart.
iii. Persevere
Galatians 6:9 encourages us,
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Don’t give up in the disruption. God is working behind the scenes.
4. The Greatest Divine Disruption
Let’s not forget, the greatest disruption in history was the coming of Jesus Christ. God Himself stepped into our broken world to save us. The cross looked like defeat, but it was the doorway to victory.
If God can bring resurrection out of crucifixion, He can bring purpose out of your pain.
Beloved, what plans have been wrecked in your life? What dreams have died? What doors have closed? Today, I invite you to lay them at the feet of Jesus Christ. Trust that His disruption is not the end; it’s the beginning of something greater.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we surrender our plans to You. Forgive us for doubting in the disruption. Give us faith to trust that You are working all things for our good and Your glory. Help us to see Your hand in every closed door, every setback, and every disappointment. Use our lives for something greater than we could ever imagine. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If this word spoke to you, take a moment to reflect. Ask God where He’s disrupting your life for something greater. Surrender your plans, and let Him write your story.
God bless you.
